Hospital Bed Prices in Kenya: Manual, Crank and Electric (2026)

A hospital bed is usually bought under time pressure, either because a relative is being discharged and needs nursing at home, or because a clinic is opening and the ward has to be furnished by a deadline. The price gap between the cheapest and the most capable bed is large, so it is worth understanding what the extra money actually buys before ordering.

What the functions actually mean

Bed marketing counts cranks and functions, which tells you very little on its own. In practice there are three movements that matter and they arrive in a predictable order.

Backrest elevation comes first and is non-negotiable. Anyone who is short of breath, being fed in bed, or at risk of aspiration needs to sit up. A single crank bed gives you this and nothing else, which for a mobile patient recovering at home is often enough.

Knee break is the second crank. Raising the knees stops the patient sliding down the bed every time the backrest goes up. Without it, a carer ends up hauling the patient back up the mattress several times a day, which is the most common cause of carer back injury and of shear damage to the patient skin.

Height adjustment is the third, and it is the function people underestimate. It lowers the bed so a frail patient can transfer safely, and raises it so a nurse or carer works at waist height instead of bending. If the bed will be used by staff many times a day, this is the function worth paying for.

Beyond that, the five-function electric bed adds lateral tilt and Trendelenburg positioning, which are clinical requirements in high-dependency settings and largely irrelevant at home.

Manual or electric?

Electric beds are faster and can often be adjusted by the patient without calling anyone, which matters enormously for dignity and independence. They also depend on mains power, cost several times more, and have an actuator and control box that can fail. Manual crank beds keep working during an outage and can be repaired by anyone with a spanner.

For most Kenyan home care situations, a double crank bed at KSh 43,000 with a good mattress is the sensible purchase. For a ward where staff adjust beds dozens of times a shift, the three function bed at KSh 120,000 repays itself in reduced staff strain. The five function electric bed belongs in HDU and ICU settings, or where a patient has complex positioning needs.

Do not skimp on the mattress

The most expensive mistake in home nursing is a good bed with an ordinary foam mattress under an immobile patient. Pressure sores develop within days, are painful, and are far more costly to treat than the mattress would have been to upgrade. If the patient cannot reposition themselves independently, budget for an alternating pressure or ripple mattress from the outset and ask us about it when you order the bed.

Alongside the mattress, the items that make home nursing workable are a bedside locker, an overbed table so the patient can eat and read without leaning, and a commode wheelchair if toileting requires transfers. Our home care starter pack groups these so nothing gets forgotten on the first order.

Questions we are asked most often

How much does a hospital bed cost in Kenya?

KSh 25,000 for a single crank bed with mattress, KSh 43,000 for a double crank, KSh 120,000 for a three function ward bed and KSh 180,000 for a five function electric bed.

Will it fit through the door and up the stairs?

Hospital beds are delivered part-assembled and the frames come apart for access, but measure your stairwell turn and door width and tell us in advance. Apartment deliveries in Nairobi are routine for us provided we know what we are walking into.

Can I buy the bed without the mattress?

Yes, and it is often the right call if you are upgrading straight to a pressure-relieving mattress. Ask us and we will quote the frame alone.

Do you deliver hospital beds outside Nairobi?

Yes, to all 47 counties. Beds are bulky rather than fragile, so upcountry delivery is straightforward and we will confirm the cost before you commit.
